European Football away days

So, what are our Top 5 European Football Away Days?

AC/Inter Milan - San Siro Stadium

Home to both Inter & AC Milan, the San Siro stadium (based in the heart of Milan) holds over 75,817 fans creating one of the best atmospheres football has to offer.

I’ve visited the San Siro a couple times over the years, and I’ve never left the stadium and not been in awe. Aside from the classic Italian football on display, the roaring fans are what make the San Siro iconic. This is certainly one of my favourite football away days!

The ground is also rich with history, which can be seen by taking one of their stadium tours which will only set you back a mere €18. This involves a trip back to football heritage as you are led around the football museum, hospitality areas, pressrooms and much more.

Apart from the football side, Italy is an amazing place and Milan has so much to offer. I found the city was bustling with life, plus, what’s better than some Italian food before heading to the San Siro to watch a Champions League match?

Real Madrid - Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

Football fans all around the world know of the La Liga giants and their football heritage. If you’re looking for football away days trips that will create memories that last a lifetime, then heading to Madrid to the Santiago Bernabeu may be your best bet.

With a stadium capacity of over 81,000 fans, the Santiago Bernabéu never fails to be full on a match-day. I travelled to watch Real Madrid around 2 years ago to see them play Sevilla FC. It’s safe to say the stadium was rocking. It would be unfair not to mention how loud the Madrid fans were!

From €12 per person, you can have a full stadium tour, which is nothing short of fascinating. My favourite part of the football trip around the stadium was viewing their trophy cabinet, which contains a magnificent 68 domestic trophies!

Aside from just the football, Madrid is a beautiful football-centric city to visit. Why not try out some Spanish cuisine before heading to the Bernabeu? I personally recommend Les Montes de Galicia. The food and atmosphere were almost as excellent as the football taking place a few miles away!

  • Stadium Capacity: 81,044

FC Bayern Munich - Allianz Arena

If you want to combine experiencing some German culture with a trip to an iconic stadium, then the Allianz Arena is for you. Home to German Giants FC Bayern Munich, this stadium holds up to 71,000 fans. In terms of architectural beauty, the Allianz Arena is certainly one of my favourites with its bowl-shaped design.

European Football trips rarely leave me jealous that a team isn’t in the Premier League, but Bayern Munich and their stadium truly are awe-inspiring. I visited a game where they played VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, and the wall of red the Bayern Munich fans created was incredible – a must-see for any football fan.

Due to the fan-friendly Bundesliga ticket pricing system, tickets unfortunately are relatively hard to get, due to them being so affordable. They can be found for as little as €17, I recommend reaching out to Bayern Munich fans before your visit to see if they can offer you any advice!

  • Stadium Capacity: 71,000

Celtic FC - Celtic Park

While a trip to Scotland may not seem as attractive as a trip abroad to a hot country, but if you’re looking to visit football heritage then Celtic Park may be the place. With a capacity of over 60,000 fans, the Scottish locals really know how to get a stadium rocking.

A few years ago, a friend of mine managed to get tickets to the Old Firm Derby (Celtic vs Rangers) and in his own words said it was the best atmosphere he had ever seen.

Even though Scottish football may not be on the same level as European teams, don’t forget that Celtic managed to beat FC Barcelona – they are no mugs! The 52 Scottish Domestic League winners certainly know how to play football and the crowd love it.

Glasgow is also an amazing city to visit pre or post-match. With a large variety of pubs and restaurants, calling it lively would be an understatement – I love it! So why not make your mystery away days trip to Celtic Park and experience some Scottish culture?

  • Stadium Capacity: 71,000

SL Benfica - Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica

Lisbon is home to Portuguese giants SL Benfica. Aside from the beautiful weather of Portugal (even I managed to catch a tan!), visiting SL Benfica for a football away day is more than enough of a reason to catch a flight and watch some European football.

One thing is for sure, Portuguese fans certainly know how to party! When I visited back in 2011 for their game against Manchester United, the roar after their goal is probably the loudest I’ve ever heard. The atmosphere was truly amazing. Their passion for football is second-to-none.

If you’re unable to get tickets, a stadium and museum tour combined is around €15, which I believe is a great price. There’s also a wide range of pubs and restaurants in Lisbon which are fantastic to soak in some pre-match atmosphere. My favourite is The Corner Irish Pub London, the vibe was perfect.

  • Stadium Capacity: 65,000
