So, what are the 5 Loudest Football Away Days?
Galatasary - Turk Telekom Arena
The Turkish football league is renown for it’s passion and ferocious atmosphere at games. Galatasaray probably lead the way in the intimidating auras department…
The Galatasaray fans hold the current record for the loudest football fans ever recorded, as they clocked in at over 131 decibels in 2011. For a little bit of perspective, that’s louder than standing directly behind a fighter jet when taking off… frightening right?
I visited back in 2015 and let me tell you this, I wish I had brought earplugs. I’ve been to some ferocious games, such as Manchester United vs Liverpool, but I’ve never heard anything quite like it when I was at the Telekom Arena. The noise shook me to my core, it wasn’t a particularly enjoyable experience!
If you’re looking to attend a football away day to the most ferocious and intimidating atmosphere, then a trip to Turkey is for you.
Leeds United - Elland Road
We all know the Premier League is possibly the biggest league in the world, and the atmosphere at games certainly does not disappoint. Leeds United are a club with a rich history and they have an extremely devoted fanbase who I’d say are the loudest football fans in England.
The ground holds just over 37,000 fans, with over 15,000 of these being seated in the East Stand. This creates an electric atmosphere in this stand which rings all around the stadium. If you’re lucky enough to be seated within or near the East Stand, don’t be surprised if you have a headache by the end of the game – the crowd are relentless!
I’ve visited Elland Road several times and I’ve never left disappointed. The noise reflects their exciting, fast-paced play style. My favourite visit was a game against West Ham United, I can’t recall a singular moment the crowd were silent throughout the game (maybe because Leeds were winning!).
If you’re looking for a taste of English football combined with an adrenaline-inducing atmosphere, then Elland Road is the one.
S.S.C. Napoli - Stadio San Paolo / Diego Armando Maradona
Italy’s passion for football simply cannot be questioned. It’s a religion. With over 54,000 fans at the Stadio San Paolo (now called Stadio Diego Armando Maradona), this place is a fortress. If you’re looking for the definition of intimidating, then you’ve found it here. The Napoli faithful are relentless!
I mean, even the iconic stadium announcer is called ‘Decibel Bellini‘, so is it really a surpise that the Stadio San Paolo is rocking on every matchday? They certainly earn my vote for the loudest football stadium in Europe.
I was lucky enough to visit back when the exhilarating Diego Maradona played for Napoli. Whenever the little magician touched the ball, the crowd would roar. I’d never heard anything like it. If you love travelling to watch the beautiful game, visiting the Stadio San Paolo should be at the top of your list – it’s a once in a lifetime experience.
Club Bolivar - Estadio Hernando Siles
Anyone for a trip to this Bolivian fortress? Standing at over 3,600m above sea level, this stadium is renown for causing even the best football players problems. Lionel Messi visited this stadium in a game for Argentina vs Bolivia back in 2013. If you can remember this iconic game, Messi threw up on the pitch and had to receive oxygen… nasty!
Aside from the altitude difficulties opposing teams face, the fans certainly create a hostile environment. Flares, Flags, Foul Language. That’s the easiest way to sum up the Estadio Hernando Siles.
Newcastle United - St James' Park
If you’re looking to watch some classic Premier League football while experiencing 50,000 geordies cheer their team on, then head up North to Newcastle United.
The Magpies are one of the biggest clubs in England and their fanbase do not disappoint. Black and white runs is in every geordies blood, and a trip to St James’ Park will help you understand how much this iconic club means to the fans!
I managed to get tickets to Newcastle vs West Bromwich Albion a while ago. I wasn’t too optimistic as it didn’t seem like the most interesting match-up. However, after Miguel Almiron’s 1st minute goal the crowd were relentless. Their love for the club was so obvious, and the noise they generated was truly outstanding. I loved it.
